An investigative report published by FOX23 News found that the Pawnee Count Sheriif's Office had altered dispatch log records in order to claim that a deputy was dispatched after a call for help was received by an elderly women who had collided with a deer.  Dispatch apparently never sent a deputy to the call.  According to Cleveland Police Department Assistant Chief, Phillip Keeling, Pawnee Sheriff's Office advised the caller "it was not their problem and insurance would take care of it and they would not be sending a deputy out".

Upon being contacted by news media, Sheriff Varnell provided the reporter with a new call log showing a different time, and claimed a deputy had been dispatched to the deer collision call.  The journalist compared the call log he received from Sheriff Varnell with one posted on the Pawnee County Sheriff Office Facebook Page and found the two records were different, the original "dispatched" a deputy nearly an hour PRIOR to the call being received, indicating the dispatch log had been altered.
