Donald Smith is the elected Sheriff. He became angry at protestors at his office and began arresting him. He and his deputies arrested 11 different people with 19 different charges of violating the county noise ordinance.

On 09/02/2022 the trials were held. ALL 19 charges were dismissed, the Judge finding the Defendants "NOT GUILTY" due to constitutional rights violations.

During the trial Sheriff Donald Smith was called as a witness for the prosecution. SMITH was asked by defense counsel the following question, and he gave the following response:

BY MS. MATHENY-WILLARD:
Q. Have you ever lied to a federal investigator
on a federal case?
A. No, ma'am.

SMITH was questioned by federal law enforcement several times when his "Close friend" was being tried for human trafficking related federal charges. He was permitting his friend to call him from the jail using other inmates pin numbers to avoid detection by federal authorities. According to AUSA Heather Carlton from the Western District of Virginia, SMITH lied. Carlton stated in open Court:

“Those are bias questions. Those are asked of every witness at trial, at grand jury, and they are being asked at the end because by the time we asked, for example, we asked Deputy Smith about those jail calls. We confronted him. He said he didn’t have the conversations.”

He also lied to a federal agent, Tami Ketcham, who filed an affidavit in his friends case detailing Smith's obstruction and lies.

On 09/02/2022 when SMITH testified that he never lied to federal agents, he lied under oath about a material matter. The affidavit and transcript clearly show the feds confronted him about the secret phone calls, and that he lied.

The Commonwealth attorney has refused to add him to the Brady list - which means an officer who should be on the brady list isn't, because of local corruption. And - to make it all worse - that Brady officer runs the department.
