On September 30, 2024, former Hernando Police Department Officer Hosie Porter surrendered to law enforcement custody after being criminally charged with sexual battery and rape. According to DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton, the felony charges stem from an incident where Porter allegedly sexually assaulted an adult victim while he was actively on duty.
The Hernando Police Department was formally alerted to the criminal allegations against Porter on September 24, 2024. Upon notification, Porter was immediately relieved of duty and placed on administrative leave by the police chief. Porter subsequently resigned from his position with the Hernando Police Department on September 30, 2024.
To ensure an independent and proper investigation, the City of Hernando transferred the case entirely to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI). The case was subsequently referred to the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
At the time of the alleged offenses, Porter was assigned as a School Resource Officer (SRO) for the department. District Attorney Barton confirmed that the complaining victim was an adult, and investigators noted there was no evidence to suggest that children or students were involved or harmed.
The felony charges of rape and sexual battery constitute severe violations of public trust and criminal law, directly involving the abuse of police authority while on duty.
