Statements made by Sheriff Kevin Clardy and investigative reporting by The McCurtain Gazette indicate that the Sheriff told the public that the dog is privately owned by Wilkerson, however, the local newspaper uncovered that the County had paid for vet visits and food for the maintenance and upkeep of the animal that would constitute a misappropriation of assets and noncompliance of state statutes, since the dog is not owned by the county.
