Mark A. Brave, the former sheriff of Strafford County, New Hampshire, recently entered a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to several felony charges. According to reports, Brave admitted to stealing nearly $19,000 in county funds by submitting false reimbursement claims for personal expenses, including trips to Boston and Florida, which were taken in connection with his extramarital affairs. Additionally, he was found to have falsified physical evidence and lied before a grand jury—charges that constitute theft by deception, falsifying physical evidence, and perjury.
As part of the plea deal, Brave agreed to a suspended prison sentence for the theft and falsification charges, along with requirements to pay restitution, surrender his law enforcement certifications, and face placement on a national registry of decertified officers. However, the perjury charges remain unresolved, and he could still face up to 7 to 14 years in prison for those offenses pending further sentencing by the court.
