Mark Maples

Statement

About a week prior my husband had assaulted me on Highway 67, since this has never happened before it scared me. I drove into town and was at the service station at the end of plank Road. I saw a Clinton police officer and told him what happened and when I told him where he said that would be sheriffs office and then he would call ahead as I stood by the vehicle, the dispatcher asked if I had any visible signs, and he said yes. I then drove to the East Feliciana sheriff office where a young white deputy named Corbin met me. He walked over to my car where I was distraught and asked if he could look in my car, I told him that was fine, he asked if I have been drinking and I told him no and he asked why I had beer in the car, I informed him that after my husband had assaulted me I grabbed my belongings and he had thrown the box of beer in my car with other items. He asked what had happened and when I told him he asked me why I stayed with him if he had attacked me, I told him we had been married 22 years and this was the first time he had ever done this. About 10 minutes later 3 or4 units pulled up with 4-6 more deputies. The young cop pointed to my car and whispered something to one of the deputies, he looked in the car and asked me about the beer and I told him what happened, my husband had drove up and the deputies went to speak to them. They then walked back over and told me I needed to just calm down and drive back home to Kentwood. I then showed them a video where he had held me at the house against my will and would not let me leave. They stopped the video after only about two minutes and said they didn’t need to see that when I asked why,, they said I had no visible marks yet the Clinton Police officer had clearly seen the mark on my arm. I told them I had a mark on my chest and asked to see a female Deputy, and they informed me that they didn’t have any. One of the cops made some statement that led me to believe they thought I had been drinking so I didn’t say it I have not been drinking. I will take a breathalyzer or whatever and they told me I just needed to drive home. I hadn’t been drinking but if they thought, otherwise, then why did they allow me to get in a car, clearly, distraught, shaking, crying to drive all the way back to Kentwood? It bothered me what had happened so I called the sheriffs department the next day and spoke to a major Maples he called me back and said that the cops well his officers didn’t see any marks, and they thought I had been drinking, which again brings up the fact that they thought I had been drinking, I was clearly distraught, and allowed me to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. He then informed me to just stay away from my husband. The incident on October 20, 2022 actually started the night before on October 19. My husband had called and told me he had Covid and asked me to bring him ivermectin, which I then went and purchased at the Kentwood co-op. I then remembered what the cop had told me that if I came back to Clinton that I would be in trouble, so I called my husband back and told him I was not coming that he had tell me he had a restraining order against me before and what major maples had told me, my husband said that he had lied about the restraining order and begged me to bring him the medicine I told him I was scared to bring it and I got off the phone. His mother then called me and told me if I didn’t take him the medicine then that made me a horrible wife and person. My husband called me again and it sounded like he was dying He sounded horrible. I love my husband and so I got the medicine, I had made him some soup and a Keylime pie for his birthday earlier that day when he was being nice to me, loaded it in the car and drove to slaughter. When I arrived, my husband was hateful and we got in an argument and he assaulted me then left the house. After he left, I realized that my phone and my wallet was left in the house, and it was now locked. I sat in my car thinking he would come back but after about an hour a black deputy in his 50s or 60s pulled up and asked me what happened. I told him a little bit but then I asked him why he was there when he told me I had called 911 I told him that was impossible since I did not have my phone. He was very rude to me and asked if I wanted to press charges when I told him that I wasn’t sure that I had a headache and I was dizzy but I didn’t wanna get my husband in trouble, he told me to follow him to the sheriff box. I told him I will try that my head was killing me and I wasn’t sure I could drive. He pulled out on the highway and I was leaving the driveway i became dizzy and had to back up into the driveway. The deputy never turned around and came back to check on me. It was freezing cold that night, my car was on empty and the only way I had to get gas was locked up inside the house. I waited until around 6:30 in the morning and then went to Sullivans to use their phone. I called one of my friends and left her a message to bring me some money to where my husband lived. I then drove back to his house, but stopped across the road because the house he was living in, belonged to his bosses family which is why I think the cops wouldn’t help me to begin with. Someone told me that not only did some of the officers go to school with his boss but they are also very wealthy. I had never met his boss, but I knocked on his door I had been crying for hours. I had a black eye a busted lip my hair was sticking up everywhere and I asked him if he had a key so I could get my belongings out of the house he told me he didn’t so I asked him to call my husband to bring the key so I could please go to my house and he promised me he would. I drove across the road to Waze, and instead of my husband showing up two young cops showed up the white officer Corbin, but also a young black deputy. They informed me basically, since I had came back over there to my husbands house when I was told not to that I deserved to have my ass beat. When I told them I had to bring him the medicine they basically told me I was stupid I was a troublemaker and then I should’ve stayed at home. I am a 48 year old housewife who has a good heart and was trying to save her marriage. Both deputies then stood there, and basically called me stupid and made me feel like I was a piece of garbage off the side of the road they then went and sat in their car with the heaters on which I didn’t have the luxury of doing since I had no gas after I asked them if I could see a female deputy, again I was told they didn’t have one I then informed them that I was not gonna stay there where I felt unsafe around them so I drove to the sheriffs department at first I stayed outside by my car, but the cops had followed me, hold up and continued to harass me so I ran inside, upset crying asking for help and I had eight or nine officers come out of their offices and stuff to help me, but then Major Maples comes out the back screams at everyone to go back to their jobs, leans over me, screaming and spitting in my face that he is going to handle me for me to go outside and wait on him. I’m already crying distraught and terrified I get up to go walk out the door and he says to the person standing beside him I’m gonna go outside and deal with this Fuc———— bitch. He comes outside where the two deputies from before Corbin and the other guy stood by me grabs me start hollering cursing calling me names told me that I deserved whatever my husband did because he (Maples)had told me to stay out of his town, and I had defied him by coming back when I tried to explain that my husband had been sick and I brought him the medicine. He said I should let him die then to defy his orders. He cursed me, grabbed me, spit in my face, called me some horrible things when I had been beat up was barely able to stand there because my head was hurting so bad, and I was still dizzy. When he told me to get the hell out of his town I told him I would try, but I was hurting from being attacked. He told me he didn’t care and then if I came back to his town I would live to regret it. While all of this was going on, there was a young girl anywhere from 15 to 20 years old sitting on the bench. And when major maples had first walked out there and started cursing and hollering at me. She actually laughed out loud. I left there and immediately drove to the next town to the ER and was told I had a concussion bruises and various other injuries. I have two uncles that were cops r where I grew up. I have a first cousin who is a police officer at LSU. He actually walks the coach out at the games. I have always take it up for cops defended cops, posted the thin blue line on my Facebook, donated, whenever the state police called, have actually been in a restaurant and paid for officers food before I had always said that out of all the cops in the nation maybe one percent was bad. I looked back now at how naive I was. I am not perfect and have never claimed to be but nobody, black, white, young, old, male, or female deserves to be treated like that by anyone. After this happened, I am terrified of going anywhere and I am definitely terrified of the police. I have had to go to East Feliciana and I am terrified the whole time. I had gotten a seatbelt ticket in September end it was due in November, after the incident it had upset me so much that the past few months I have been a basket case, I forgot to pay it and I was actually scared to call about the ticket because I would have to interact with a member of law enforcement. I received a letter in the mail that my $50 ticket is now over $200 which I will pay because I broke the law and I didn’t pay my fine when I should but I am literally terrified of having to go anywhere that a cop is. I still believe in the law and that it should be enforced and that the people(some of them) that choose law enforcement as a career are honorable, selfless people that risk their lives for no money and no respect because they are honest, good people who want to help others. But now after what has happened to me, I will always be fearful and untrusting of police officers. I was in therapy but I had to stop because of money problems. I just recently got my insurance back and hopefully I’ll be able to work through what happened and not be scared anymore. I also know the way they treated me they have probably treated other domestic violence victims like that and there are probably a lot of women that won’t call for help because of them.
