On February 14th 2026 at 2:34 am Kent K9 officer Michael J. Carnahan arrived at a Ravenna City Police traffic stop at 3505 West Main Street, Ravenna, Ohio 44266 to perform a free air sniff of a vehicle. Officer Carnahan removed his K9 from his vehicle and proceeded to lead his K9 to the opposite side of my vehicle from which he had parked his police vehicle. Specifically, the front left corner of the vehicle. Prior to engaging his K9 in the free air sniff officer Carnahan proceeded to walk to the area of the driver’s door handle and with a package of what I can only guess was some sort of narcotic and touched it to the vehicle. Officer Carnahan then rotated to his right away from the vehicle and walked back to the front left corner of the vehicle at which time he led his dog to the driver’s door of the vehicle where he claims the K9 alerted. Officer Carnahan can then be seen taking his gloves from his rear waistband and as he is walking back to the front of the vehicle, he hides the package in his gloves and tucks his gloves back into his rear waistband and signals the Ravenna Police officers that the K9 alerted to the vehicle. I immediately questioned the validity of officer Carnahan’s free air sniff, as I knew without question that there were no illegal drugs in the interior of the vehicle. I also witnessed officer Carnahan leaving his K9 at the front of the vehicle and then proceeding to step to the driver’s door handle and touch the car. I did not see the package in his hand until I watched the dash cam footage. Officer Carnahan tried to make an analogy by stating if there is a crockpot in the kitchen with a roast cooking in it that you would be able to smell it because the wind is blowing from the north east. I stated that the wind was blowing the complete opposite direction from the south west and that I could feel it on the back of my neck as I was facing north east. Officer Carnahan stated that I was incorrect and one of the Ravenna police officers stated to me that “ he told you how it works” as if this would convince me of the validity of the K9 free air sniff. I checked with NOAA and the National Weather Service as to the wind speed and direction at the time of this incident and as I stated at 02:35 the wind was blowing from the south west at 3 mph. I have watched the dash cam footage from three separate police vehicles and after zooming in and slowing the video speed officer Carnahan can be seen trying to manipulate the free air sniff with his unknown package that he had concealed in his gloves. Officer Carnahan has undoubtedly used this tactic for manipulating his K9 many times.
