Coal County Sheriff Jason Smith, the elected chief law enforcement officer for Coal County, Oklahoma. Sheriff Smith is currently the defendant in a pending criminal case in the District Court of Coal County, Case No. CM-2025-00093, filed on or about November 21, 2025, and assigned to Judge Mark Campbell. The prosecuting attorney listed is Chuck Sullivan, District 18 Attorney, with the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office listed as the arresting agency. A special docket hearing is presently set for February 6, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., and he has been released on a personal recognizance bond.
In CM-2025-00093, Sheriff Smith is charged with two misdemeanor offenses: assault and battery and domestic abuse assault and battery. These charges arise out of a July 2025 domestic incident in which Sheriff Smith is alleged to have struck his wife and another adult male during a dispute. The same underlying event also led to a multi-county grand jury indictment of Coal County Undersheriff Jesse Yother, who is charged with felony intimidation of a witness and misdemeanor obstructing an officer. According to public reporting, Yother is alleged to have interfered with a Coalgate police officer’s response to the incident and to have pressured a witness to alter her statement. Sheriff Smith has publicly denied the allegations against him, and all charges remain pending; he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Oklahoma Attorney General has publicly commented that there can be no tolerance for a sheriff who is sworn to preserve the peace but whose actions, if proven, would undermine the law and endanger public safety, further stating that such conduct would render Sheriff Smith unfit to continue serving as sheriff. The grand jury has reportedly requested that Sheriff Smith be immediately suspended from office pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings. These official statements and actions reflect a significant governmental assessment of the seriousness of the allegations and of Sheriff Smith’s fitness for office.
Accordingly, in any criminal matter where Sheriff Jason Smith is a material witness, affiant, or supervising officer, the prosecution should treat the existence and status of State v. Jason Smith, CM-2025-00093—including the nature of the charges, the procedural posture, the related grand jury indictment of Undersheriff Jesse Yother, and the Attorney General’s public statements—as Brady/Giglio material subject to disclosure. Any eventual plea, deferred sentence, conviction, or formal judicial finding related to these allegations would heighten the impeachment value and must be promptly incorporated into updated disclosures.
We will not stand by as our brothers and sisters are brutalized, criminalized, and silenced.
We reject a world where the powerful profit from our poverty and our lives are treated as expendable. We will not wait for justice to be handed down from above.
We will organize, resist, and take it for ourselves.
WE ARE NO LONGER ASKING...
