Statement

Police use pepper spray and pull people out of the elevator of their apartment complex. “We live here,” one of them yells repeatedly.

According to the Police Department, the officers were “attempting to effect a lawful arrest related to activity observed in the street following a riot at the Iowa State Capitol.” As of June 12, 2020, no formal citizen complaints had been made in connection with the incident and the officers remained on active duty. “As a matter of policy and procedure, we investigate every use of force by our officers and this will be subject to that review,” the police department said. Neither officer responded to a request for comment. The department did not respond to a request for an update on the case in May 2021.
