Statement

Officer jumps out of a patrol car and grabs Ariel Alfaro-Fonseca.

Alfaro-Fonseca was arrested after “standing in the middle of the roadway” despite a dispersal order, according to a report by the Police Department. But video clearly shows him on a sidewalk. Additionally, the report claims Alfaro-Fonseca and those accompanying him were carrying water bottles. Neither Alfaro-Fonseca nor the other protester in the video have bottles in their hands. Alfaro-Fonseca was initially booked for a curfew violation, but the charge was dropped according to the Miami-Dade County Clerk of the Courts documents. The Police Department’s Professional Compliance Bureau confirmed that its investigation had concluded and no discipline had resulted as of May 24, 2021. Both officers were assigned to the Special Patrol Bureau as of that date. The officers did not comment to ProPublica in 2020.
