Karson Hyder has been identified in non-official local/social reporting as the Shelby Police Department officer involved in a May 29, 2026 arrest incident in Shelby, North Carolina. Official city and police statements initially did not name the officer, and The Shelby Independent expressly declined to publish the officer’s name because it had not been confirmed by an official source. The North Carolina Beat identified the officer as Karson Hyder.
The incident involved Cherrie Alana Moore, 34, during what Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser described as a criminal investigation in which officers encountered a “suspicious female.” Doorbell-camera footage circulated online showing an officer taking Moore to the ground, straddling her, and repeatedly punching her while she was on the ground. In the video, Moore can reportedly be heard saying, “I don’t have a warrant. What are you doing?” and asking for help; a second officer can be heard intervening and telling the first officer to “let go” and “I got her.”
Moore was reportedly charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a government official. The Shelby Independent reported that claims the charges were dropped were unverified at the time of its publication.
The public response was immediate. Protesters gathered in downtown Shelby and outside police headquarters on May 29, demanding accountability. Chief Brad Fraser called the conduct shown in the video “disturbing and inappropriate,” placed the officer on administrative suspension, and said an internal affairs investigation was underway.
By May 30, 2026, WBTV reported that the Shelby officer seen in the video had been fired. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation then opened an independent investigation into an allegation of excessive force by a Shelby police officer, at the request of Chief Fraser and the Cleveland County District Attorney. The SBI said it would submit findings to the District Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete.
