Hawaiʻi DLNR says its DOCARE Maui Branch was notified on May 6, 2026, after Instagram posts appeared to show an adult male throwing an object toward a Hawaiian monk seal swimming off the Lahaina shoreline. A DOCARE officer contacted a 37-year-old male from Seattle who matched the suspect description; the man was detained, identified, advised of his rights, declined to make a statement, and requested counsel. DLNR said no criminal charges had been filed at that time and therefore did not release the suspect’s identity. The case was being referred to NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement because Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
