Statement

CLEET License # 0160590    Status: ACTIVE       Effective Date:  08/28/2020

On April 1, 2022 Deputy Schanz was outside his jurisdiction when he spotted Brandon Hummel at a convenience store in Atoka County.   Dash Camera caught an altercation and then body camera shows Deputy Schanz come out from around a building and then draw his pistol and point it at him as the man enters a vehicle.   What occurs behind the building is unknown as that footage was not publically disclosed.  JSCO put out a statement on Facebook alleging that the subject was a "wanted fugitive" although court records indicate that the charge for fugitive from justice had been dismissed on 09/23/2020.  The warrants mentioned in the Facebook post, were actually for failure to appear/pay fines.  What is not stated in the social media post was that Deputy Schanz had a prior incident and likely a use of force with Hummel where he was charged with A&B on an Officer (see Johnston County Case # CF-2020-00100) This was the likely reason Schanz recognized Hummel.
