Statement

Two college students are tased while in their own vehicle.

The Atlanta Police Department initially fired Streeter, Gardner, Hood and Jones, and the former Fulton County district attorney, Paul Howard, announced on June 2, 2020, that he was filing charges against all six officers involved in the encounter. On June 8, 2020, Streeter and Gardner filed a lawsuit in the Fulton County Superior Court calling for their jobs back and claiming they were not given due process. On Feb. 1, 2021, Atlanta’s Civil Service Board ruled in favor of Streeter and Gardner and revoked their dismissals. The officers had argued “that their use of force was proper and in compliance with the law, the policies of the Atlanta Police Department, prevailing standards of law enforcement, and the training provided to them through the City of Atlanta Police Department and the State of Georgia,” according to their lawsuit. As of May 26, 2021, the Police Department said the investigation into the incident remained open and Gardner and Streeter were on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the criminal matter. Sauls and Claud remained active with the department as of May 2021, a spokesperson said. The Atlanta Police Department has released disciplinary records and body-worn camera footage for all six officers involved. ProPublica reached out to the officers in July 2020: Hood declined to comment and referred us to the International Brotherhood of Police. The union didn’t return a request for comment. Attorneys for Streeter and Gardner did not return a request for comment. Sauls, Jones and Claud did not return requests for comment. The cases remained pending as of June 17, 2021, according to the court.
